“I used to chant ‘Union makes us strong,’ and now I truly feel its meaning after seeing the value of union through the Case Of Utility Store Workers.
On the Fourth Day Workers peacefully protest the government’s decision to close utility stores. According to the General Secretary of the Utility Stores Union (CBA), the Government made a gesture of peace and reconciliation to the workers of Utility Stores Corporation USC.
The leaders of the three unions, despite their ideological differences Protesting together. They met with the Prime Minister’s special assistant on political Affairs Rana Sana Ullah.
Rana Sana Ullah assured them that no workers would be laid off and that the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) would not be closed.A delegation of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) which is part of the coalition in the current Government including Nafisa Shah, Agha Rafiullah, Mir Aijaz Jhakrani and the head of the Peoples Labour Bureau Chaudhry Manzoor visited the protest camp and assured the Protesters of USC of their party’s support.
The Peoples Party leaders added that the USC carried a legacy of Our Leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and they would raise this issue in the parliament as well as with the government.
A delegation from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), an opposition party in the Parliament led by Sheikh Waqas Akram and Khawaja Sheeraz, visited the protest camp. They expressed strong opposition to the government’s decision.
The case of the Utility Store workers demonstrates the power of union solidarity and collective action. Different unions came together, and support from political figures highlighted the important role of organized labour in protecting workers’ rights.
By putting aside their ideological differences, the unions focused on a common goal which is job protection and stop privatization. This unity not only showed their strength but it will also influenced the government’s decision to close the Utility Stores Corporation.
This effort mirrors the core of the labour movement: unity and solidarity in the fight for justice and fair treatment.It is clear that when workers and unions stand together, their voices are stronger.
