The Workers of Utility Store Corporation USC End Sit-In after successful Negotiations with the Government. All decisions will be made with the consultation of the Unions and other stakeholders, the Federal Government assured.
The Federal government has promised the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) Unions that the Department will not be shut down. This is a big win for workers’ rights. The decision comes after a week-long protest by Utility Stores Corporation USC workers in Islamabad, which ended after both side’s successful negotiations.
As part of the agreement, Rana Tanveer Hussain the Federal Minister agreed to set up a committee to manage the restructuring of the USC. This committee will include members from all unions so that workers can have a voice in the process.
The protest started on August 26, 2024, in response to the federal cabinet’s decision to close the Utility Stores Corporation-USC as part of its downsizing plan. Shutting down the USC would also end an Rs50 billion subsidy that helps millions of low-income families around the country. The jobs of 11,000 permanent and contractual workers at USC were also at risk.
The successful Results of the peaceful protest show the power of collective bargaining and the importance of workers’ rights. The government’s decision to form a committee with union representatives shows a willingness to have meaningful discussions and address Worker’s concerns. This negotiation is not only a win-win for the unions and the government but also benefits poor families and is in the best interest of Pakistan.
This victory inspires workers in the Public Sector across the Globe, showing that collective action can lead to positive change. It proves the resilience and determination of USC Workers who stood up for their rights and won.
